In 1997, ECVPT was awarded provisional recognition by the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation. Its interim committee of consisted of nine founding members. Individuals specialized in veterinary pharmacology and toxicology could apply for de facto recognition of their credentials up until 2002. Based on their credentials some applicants were granted de facto recognition and others were given the option of sitting an examination. ECVPT started formal residency training programmes in 2008 and has held examinations annually since 2011. Read more about residency programmes.
